Sustainability isn’t just for people anymore — it’s gone to the dogs (and cats). Eco-friendly pet parenting has exploded into one of the hottest trends in pet care, as owners seek greener ways to pamper their furry companions.
The trend is catching attention as being pet-minded and planet smart. More people adopt biodegradable poop bags, plant-based or lab-grown pet food options, and upcycling household items into toys. What do you think? Are there any eco-friendly pet topics you’re curious about, or is it just a fabulous fad?
At All About Spot, our take is that eco-friendly pet parenting is here to stay, mostly because it’s already a 4.5 billion market. This fact alone takes it beyond fad status and toward an evolution in pet ownership. From biodegradable poop bags to plant-based pet food and up-cycled toys, this movement reflects a growing desire to reduce our ecological footprint while keeping our pets happy and healthy. Let’s dig deeper.
The Rise of Eco-Friendly Pet Parenting
Pet ownership is booming in the United States, with 70 percent of households owning pets in 2024, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA). This percentage is expected to keep climbing in 2025, but with an environmental twist.
Pet owners are keenly aware that millions of plastic poop bags will clog landfills, and increasing pet food production means more carbon emissions. In fact, according to one study conducted by UCLA in 2017, pet food consumption in the United States generated 64 million tons of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gases annually. That’s equivalent to 13 million more cars on the road.
“People are waking up to the fact that their pets have a carbon paw print, too,” says Christine Mailler, community relations and sustainability manager at Go! Solutions. “It’s not just about us anymore—it’s about making choices that benefit the planet our pets live on.”
Mailler and others are helping to drive demand for sustainable products and their efforts are working. Global Market Insights estimates the global market for eco-friendly pet supplies will hit $15 billion by 2027.
Biodegradable Poop Bags: Eco-Friendly Impact
One of the simplest ways pet owners go green is by swapping traditional plastic poop bags for biodegradable or compostable alternatives. Standard plastic bags can take hundreds of years to break down, often ending up as microplastics that harm wildlife. In contrast, biodegradable options from plant-based materials like cornstarch or bamboo decompose in months under the right conditions.

For example, Pogi’s Compostable Poop Bags are certified to ASTM D6400 standards. These bags are made from renewable plant starches and break down in 90 days in industrial compost facilities.
“Pet parents need to read the packaging carefully,” advises environmental expert Mariane Ferencevic in an article on rover.com. “Not all ‘biodegradable’ claims hold up. Look for certifications like BPI or TÜV Austria to ensure they’re legit.”
Since composting pet waste isn’t always an option (as many municipal systems don’t accept it due to pathogens), plant-based bags still reduce reliance on fossil fuel-derived plastics. The switch is certainly needed. More than 500 million plastic poop bags are used globally each year. Many people are finding peace of mind that even if they go to a landfill, the biodegradable material will eventually break down.
Plant-Based Pet Food: A Sustainable Bite
Another rising pillar of eco-friendly pet parenting is sustainable pet food. Traditional meat-based diets for dogs and cats can be resource intensive and require vast amounts of water, land, and energy. According to one study, pet food production accounts for 25-30 percent of meat consumption in the United States.
“Our goal is to provide nutrition that’s good for pets and the planet,” said Ryan Bethencourt, CEO of Wild Earth, during a Forbes interview.
His company specializes in alternatives like lab-grown meat, cultivated from animal cells without slaughter. For example, Wild Earth created a plant-based kibble made from ingredients like koji (a protein-rich fungus) and oats. Even in small quantities, plant-based and lab-grown alternatives lighten the environmental load — with some companies reporting their production solutions can account for a 90 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional meat production.
Upcycling Pet Toys: Trash into Treasure
One of the more creative steps some eco-friendly pet parents are taking include up-cycling measures that transform household items into pet toys and products. The toys are as diverse as the people who come up with them.

For example, Etsy sellers have come up with more than 1,000 different ways to up-cycle trash into cat toys. Any of these ideas can be incorporated at home. Old T-shirts can become tug ropes, and empty dog food bags can be transformed into durable mats or garden weed barriers. Pet parents can make practically anything from denim, wool, and even discarded plastic — ideas that will be a big hit if infused with catnip.
There are even more toys being made for dogs as a cost-effective way to make products and cut down on waste at the same time. Some Etsy ideas are fun like toy ducks, fetch toys, and denim dog bone pillows. But there are plenty of other ideas too. Some pet owners have even used pet food bags to collect leaves and grow herbs.
Either way, all of these solutions allow pet owners to get crafty while shrinking their environmental impact. With so much attention being given to people, it makes perfect sense to think about pets too.
Eco-Friendly Pet Care: Why It Matters in 2025
Eco-friendly pet parenting isn’t just a feel-good fad. It’s a response to a planet in crisis. Pet owners today see their pets as part of a family and want their values to extend to their pets.
With climate change accelerating and landfills overflowing, every choice counts. All About Spot makes excellent use of eco-friendly ideas too. Since all pet records are digital, there is no more need to create endless lists and revised notes. There are even places where pet owners can store their eco-friendly preferences for pet sitters to follow, too. It’s the perfect way to be pet-minded and planet smart!
